New wave is a hip hop subgenre that is steadily taking the industry by storm. South Africa seems to be fertile ground for young emerging artists who make the sub-genre. BLXCKIE is one of the foremost names in these circles, given the acclaim he has received over the past year.
His popular single “Big Time Sh’lappa” featuring Lucasraps was released to critical acclaim in 2020. It showcased how technically proficient the young rapper is when it comes to putting words together and carrying a flow. His 2021 appearance on the posse cut “Mntase” by Dr Peppa alongside fellow new wave artists Chang Cello, Aux Cable and Lord Script has added anticipation to his own body of work.
On Friday, BLXCKIE released his latest single “David” as a lead up to his official debut album B4Now, slated for a 21 May 2021 release. The single finds the young artist at his most relaxed, an approach that complements the hypnotic instrumental that’s peppered with harmonies and humming as backing vocals. He boldly raps, “Not a nigga you can play with, keep a stone on me like David” in the song’s chorus and refrain, asserting himself in the game.
BLXCKIE has certainly had a good first quarter of the year, having featured in Sauwcy and Money Badoo’s recently released music video of “Lil Bih The Remix”. Now, with the release of “David” as the lead single to his debut album B4Now, he’s on his way to have a great year overall.
