Beloved South African artist ANATII returns with a brand new single “AMADLOZI” featuring LOOKATUPS, after a hiatus from publicly releasing music. He briefly returned to drop his first single “PUNISHER” in August, but it was released as an NFT. To introduce this new concept of releasing music, he tweeted, “time for creators to take control. sell art not your soul.” Shortly before the “PUNISHER” release, around June, he also removed all of his music from digital streaming platforms.
However, it seems that he has gone back to the drawing board and re-uploaded part of his discography to online digital streaming platforms. He has now also released his latest single, ”AMADLOZI”, which is available on all digital streaming platforms.
In true ANATII style, “AMADLOZI” is a ‘spiritual’ anthem, the title of which translates to “Ancestors”. It can be seen as a continuation of his spiritual awakening, which is a path he has been on since his single “THIXO ONOFEFE” and prior album IYEZA.
Despite the fanfare that comes with ANATII’s return, there have been some disgruntled parties. When ANATII released his critically acclaimed album IYEZA, some people felt that he had unfairly gleaned from Espacio Dios, an artist who was on his label and had worked closely with him during IYEZA‘s production. IYEZA‘s sound was a departure to what ANATII was known for prior to its release but was instead in the style of Espacio Dios, prompting speculation that Espacio’s influence was apparent on the album, despite the two going their separate ways shortly its release.
