Jay Jody

Jay Jody is an artist with a lot to say on his new release, Sunset Stories: A Mixtape

Former member of SA hip hop duo, B3NCHMARQ, and now one half of a duo with his brother A-Reece that’s released BLUE TAPE, Jay Jody has released his debut project. Said project is a 12 track mixtape titled Sunset Stories: A Mixtape that serves as an emphatic reintroduction of Jay Jody as a solo artist to the South African hip hop scene. Released through the newly established Revenge Club Records, Sunset Stories: A Mixtape was preceded by a two-pack release in the form of THE REVENGE PACK released in the first quarter of the year (April 15), as well as THE REVENGE PACK: BEFORE SUNSET released in the third quarter of the year (September 2).

With the mixtape, Jay Jody uses all the tools in his tool-box, singing and rapping in equal amounts, and often tackling vulnerable subject matter throughout the tape. On “Believe In Me”, he pretty much shares his frustrations with his life currently, as he looks ahead on what he aspires to achieve. He raps  “Also can you please stop calling my phone, I am not with Reece, I am chilling at home.” alluding to the fact that being the bigger brother to a much more successful and renowned rap superstar must come with its cons, as many may want to go through him in order to get to his brother A-Reece. He goes on this song to reveal his innermost thoughts, as he raps, “Looking in the mirror, making sure that it’s still me, hoping what keeps me alive don’t kill me, praying that this shit works before it gets worse, I don’t wanna worry ’bout where the next deal be, I don’t wanna worry ’bout where my daughter’s gon’ eat… I wanna know what it’s like for the people to love you so much that they just scream, I wanna know what it’s like to not struggle for things that I want or might need, I wanna know what it’s like to have a chain on my neck but still feel free…”

Features on the mixtape range from a variety of collaborators that include B.O.Y Wonder, A-Reece, Marcus Harvey, Una Rams, Blxckie, Kaydance, Towdee Mac and IMP Tha Don. The production on the tape is handled almost exclusively by Sibusiso Sondag, known as SundaeBeats, with contributions by producer TSEKS. Jay Jody is a fully fledged artist with a lot to say. Whether it’s on some combative shit, or vulnerable introspection, or love songs – he has depth in how he approaches such subjects in his songs. While he may still be attempting to find his place in the game, there’s no denying his star power and potential to take it to the very top.
