Keneilwe Mothoa and Lu Mxalisa’s homeware brand, Neimil, has just landed a distribution deal with H&M. The pair started the brand in 2018, creating quality, handcrafted homeware products inspired by people and their diversity.
Of the brand, the two say, “The ethos of Neimil is to tell authentic stories through our products and to always re-invent the narrative of what handcraft is.” In March 2020, during level 5 of the country’s lockdown, the brand posted their first work. A series of punch needle embroidery self portraits on their page, they said of it, “During this time we are creating some punch needle artwork to keep our minds, hands and spirits occupied; it’s a very relaxing process while creating something beautiful.”
They remained a boutique operation of considered pieces and considered spaces over the past two years, taking on interior design projects, creating various art pieces and scatter cushions. Their latest move is a collaboration with H&M HOME; the brand will be available at certain H&M HOME shops across South Africa from the 4th November 2021.
Of the collaboration, Caroline Nelson, Country Manager of H&M South Africa said, “Through this partnership, H&M aims to support small business owners and promote the local design industry within South Africa.”
Keneilwe Mothoa, co-founder of Neimil said, “Expect a piece of ourselves in this collection, a feeling of love and warmth. H&M is giving us a platform to share our story and our craft with the world and in turn supporting us in their stores to help us grow. This felt right, and this is why we are here.”
The Neimil collection will be available for purchase at H&M HOME shops in Sandton City, V&A Waterfront and Menlyn Park from the 4th November 2021.
