If you enjoyed the Spotify Wrapped function – the campaign that allows Spotify users to view a compilation of data about their activity on the platform over the past year and invites them to share it on social media – on the music streaming site, they took it to the next level with an in-real-life version in the form of a year end party.
MC’d by Moozlie, the wrap party took place in Fox Street in central Joburg and featured performances by some of the country’s most popular artists. Moozlie, in the spirit of Wrapped, announced the platform’s most streamed albums and artists, and welcomed those present on stage to perform.
A-Reece had the crowd baying in anticipation, Kelvin Momo (the fourth most streamed South African artist in South Africa in 2023) took to the stage for private school piano set, Makhadzi brought a lively performance to the venue, and Maglera Doe Boy showed why he’s grown in rank to one of the country’s best hip hop performers. Kabza de Small, SA’s most streamed artist for 2023, was the highlight of the night playing his string of hits, before Thakzin took over and closed the show.
The venue had kasi spaza-themed decor, while an arcade game, table tennis and a photobooth added interactive elements to the night. “Spotify Wrapped is our biggest global campaign each year, and it is always such a pleasure to bring it to life for the fans who kept streaming all year long, and the artists who ensured we had music for every occasion,” says Sithabile Kachisa, Spotify’s Marketing Lead, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
The global streaming service’s mandate was clear that the Spotify Wrapped party is a celebration of the remarkable growth of local music in South Africa throughout the year. We can’t wait to see what the next year holds.
